about

AZ.TEK was born out of equal parts evolution and necessity. We have been working in noise centric music together for more than a decade, always trying to push ourselves forward. In the past few years, the way we have tried to catalyze ourselves into different ways of approaching creation was by using chance.

Challenged by a new, geographical problem, we were in need of a system where we could

create a substantial body of work in an efficient manner and remove the pre-planning – moving right into creation. AZ.TEK was the solution.

The pieces and their components were composed by chance. Meaning, for example, that a list of instruments was drawn up and a die rolled to see what instrument a player would be using for a given pieces of the composition. There were rolls for 7 variables per composition- one instrument per person, per track for three runs and an emotion. The one constant is duration. Which, as everyone know as the perfect length for a pop song is 3:43 (see The Cars.)

The plain outline for the project is we would record for the duration with the instrument chosen by chance, then overdub simultaneously twice, changing instruments accordingly via the chart. Thus we would be interpreting the composition in the first pass, then arranging on the two subsequent passes. We would have an emotional tone as a tonal jumping-off point, also chosen from a list we made, by the roll of a die, hoping for some interior logic to the choices we were making in the interpretation.

The normal elements that get in the way of “making” have been removed. There is no wasted

time. There is no writing, no rehearsing, no mulligans, just make it and move on.

The last part of the process is mixing. Volume control and spacial tools are incorporated in the mix in order to bring out the nature of the creation. No editing is allowed. The mixer must find the heart of the piece and use basic controls to expand on and clarify the idea.

AZ.TEK is open source, for lack of a better word. We will be happy to share our charts, and any information that you would like, in case you want to attempt your own version. We would

certainly be interested in hearing other duos interpretations of these charts.

I keep thinking of someone listening to this, and saying, “My 8 year old could do this!”, and I say, “We would love to hear it. Here are the charts.”
